The Buddha probably wouldn't have had much patience for that Verizon "Can You Hear Me Now?" guy. If you ever answer, "Yes, I can hear you," then the answer would always have to be "yes," because if you couldn't hear him, how would you know when he was out of range or not making noise?
You can hear that guy no matter where in the world he is (New York, L.A., or some darkened stage somewhere). You can hear him even if he's not making any sound. Your sense of hearing is an emergent property of your consciousness, it doesn't arise from the sound.
