This Week's Shows (7/10 - 7/16) - Post-Pandemic Edition

The pandemic's over and if you have even half a brain, you're fully vaccinated by now and safe to meet with others in small, sweaty music clubs.  This seems as appropriate a time as any then to renew the weekly previews of live music in Atlanta.  This list is not comprehensive and is a totally one-sided, biased selection of things that interest me.  Sorry if your favorite band or nephew's gig is not included here.

SATURDAY, JULY 10, 2021

Clew, Jelani Imani, Payton Moore & Trent In The Trees (Purgatory at The Masquerade, 7:00 pm) - Southern rap from members of Atlanta's prodigious hip-hop community.  Buy a CD or two - you might need it Thursday night.

SUNDAY, JULY 11, 2021

✅Gentleman Jesse, Country Westerns, Tag Team, Ben Trickey, Rick Dang Bitch! & Vito Romeo (The Earl, 2:00 pm) - This indoor show will be both an Anniversary party for The Earl, an Atlanta institution for 22 years now, and their first show since March 14, 2020 (i.e., before the Great Pandemic).  This is history.  In the future, you'll want to be able to say that you were there.  Oh, and it's a free show, so what have you got to lose?

Magnolia Bayou, Nobody's Darling & Jackwagon  (Purgatory at The Masquerade, 7:00 pm) - Southern-fried blues rock from Gulfport, Mississippi, with Atlanta's Nobody's Darling and Jackwagon opening.

TUESDAY, JULY 13, 2021

Young Mister, Oh Jeremiah & Matt Gallait (Eddie's Attic, 6:00 pm) - Singer-songwriter showcase at Eddie's.

WEDNESDAY, JULY 14, 2021

Nanseera Wolff (Eddie's Attic, 6:00 pm) - Nanseera is a Miami/Atlanta based singer/songwriter with an old soul, a distinctive style, and a knack for poignant lyrics.  Her songs explore societal injustice and the experiences of the in-between with nuance and empathy.

THURSDAY, JULY 15, 2021

GG King, Vincas, Warm Red (The Earl, 9:00 pm) -  It's a "surprise" birthday show for GG King guitarist Josh Feigert, but not a free event.  Admission is donation based, with suggested donations ranging from $10 to $30, although Josh, who's well aware of the show,  says he also likes "weird UK DIY records from the early 80s, red wine, North African cassette tapes, and southern rap CDs" (good thing you bought a CD at Saturday's Masquerade show).

Deante Hitchcock, Timothy Isaiah, Dex Ca (Aisle 5, 8:00 pm) -  This show is a part of something called "Thursday Cxnnections," a so-called opportunity to meet and network with industry professionals across fashion, sneakers, gaming, and music platforms. Participants will have the opportunity to engage with local emerging artists with "high growth potential." The first hour will be dedicated to an open bar and networking followed by live performances by those said emerging artists. Just the thing is you like getting hustled - or hustling others - before getting your dance on.

FRIDAY, JULY 16, 2021

Nikki Nair, Sanguine, Dee Belvedere & Mull (529, 9:00 pm) - Nikki Nair is an expert in cross-genre blending. His sets have been described as somatic, textured and dynamic, braiding acidic electro, broken rhythms, jungle, experimental disco, and bass music. These are sonic narratives pointed to move and mesmerize peak-time floors. Remember that this is 529 and there are four acts on the bill, so don't expect that peak time to occur until well after midnight.

Taylor Scott Band (Aisle 5, 7:30 pm) - The roots-rock Taylor Scott Band delivers music heavily influenced by funk, blues, and soul music. Their album All We Have was produced by Steve Berlin of Los Lobos.

Hive Mind (Aisle 5, 11:30 pm) - There are several bands, including ones from the UK and from Indiana, going by the name "Hive Mind." The one playing this late-night set at Aisle 5 is apparently from South Florida, and like their namesakes, they're a hardcore, screamo, thrash outfit.

Mariah the Scientist (Hell at The Masquerade, 7:30 pm) - Mariah the Scientist is Atlanta native Mariah Buckles. This show by the R&B singer, now based in New York, is sold out.

Wiley from Atlanta, Jaye Newton & Amelia (Pugatory at Atlanta, 8:00 pm) - If you didn't buy your ticket for Mariah the Scientist in time, you can compensate with this show by rapper and singer (and Druid Hills HS graduate) Wiley From Atlanta.

Electric Feels (Heaven at Atlanta, 9:00 pm) - Big, three-event night at the Masquerade.  Electric Feels is an "experiential dance party" that features DJs, stage production, and more.  The party includes the music of 2010's bands like MGMT, Tame Impala, Miike Snow, and the like.

Post Script: The premier of new music venue The Eastern will be on August 6 (but I'm not paying "$49 - $99" to see Bright Eyes), and L5P's Variety Playhouse will have its first show on August 7.  Terminal West reopens on Friday the 13th of August.  We're still waiting on word from the Drunken Unicorn on when (or if) they're reopening.
