This Week's Shows (7/16 - 7/22)

A relatively slow week as the music industry in general and Atlanta's live venues in particular continue to find their post-pandemic footing.  To flesh out this week's listings, and to reset this series so that it covers Friday nights to the following Thursday, Imma copy/pasta last week's final day listings for Friday, July 16 as the first day listings for this week.

FRIDAY, JULY 16, 2021

Nikki Nair, Sanguine, Dee Belvedere & Mull (529, 9:00 pm) - Nikki Nair's cross-genre blending has been described as somatic, textured and dynamic, braiding acidic electro, broken rhythms, jungle, experimental disco, and bass music. They're sonic narratives pointed to move and mesmerize peak-time floors. Remember that this is 529 and there are four acts on the bill, so don't expect that peak time to occur until well after midnight.

Taylor Scott Band (Aisle 5, 7:30 pm) - The roots-rock Taylor Scott Band delivers music heavily influenced by funk, blues, and soul music. Their album All We Have was produced by Steve Berlin of Los Lobos.

Hive Mind (Aisle 5, 11:30 pm) - There are several bands, including ones from the UK and from Indiana, going by the name "Hive Mind." The one playing this late-night set at Aisle 5 is apparently from South Florida, and like their namesakes, they're a hardcore, screamo, thrash outfit.

Mariah the Scientist (Hell at The Masquerade, 7:30 pm) - Mariah the Scientist is Atlanta native Mariah Buckles. This show by the R&B singer, now based in New York, is sold out.

Wiley from Atlanta, Jaye Newton & Amelia (Pugatory at Atlanta, 8:00 pm) - If you didn't buy your ticket for Mariah the Scientist in time, you can compensate with this show by rapper and singer (and Druid Hills HS graduate) Wiley From Atlanta.

Electric Feels (Heaven at Atlanta, 9:00 pm) - Big, three-event night at the Masquerade.  Electric Feels is an "experiential dance party" that features DJs, stage production, and more.  The party includes the music of 2010's bands like MGMT, Tame Impala, Miike Snow, and the like.

SATURDAY, JULY 17, 2021

White Ring, No Eyes & Mirror Move (529, 9:00 pm) - White Ring is a southwest Florida electronic band. Originally the duo of Bryan Kurkimilis and Kendra Malia, they were later joined by Adina Viarengo. One of the proponents of the "Witch House" movement, White Ring blend heavy, distorted electronics with eerie, unsettling vocals. Atlanta's No Eyes and Mirror Move open.

Thrice Groove, Cleotrvppv, Empress Rah & Allurr (Aisle 5, 10:00 pm) - I don' know.  Southern rap? Trip hop?  Trap?  Go find out for yourself.

SUNDAY, JULY 18, 2021

Kristopher James (Eddie's Attic, 8:00 pm) - Singer/songwriter from the Americana/soul school. It's Eddie's Attic, so get there early so you can get the best table and make everyone else sit behind you.

WEDNESDAY, JULY 21, 2021

Allison Russell (Eddie's Attic, 7:00 pm) - Singer, songwriter, poet and activist performing soulful, Al Green-esque songs.  It's Eddie's Attic, so see if you can reserve a table for four, and then make your neighbors sit at the table with their backs to the stage while you and your wife face forward.

THURSDAY, JULY 22, 2021

Charlie Mars & King Dream (Eddie's Attic, 7:00 pm)  - Mississippi-born singer/songwriter Charlie Mars is a country- and folk-inflected pop artist with a warm vocal croon and a knack for crafting poignant, earthy songs. King Dream is an indie psych-rock project from Bay Area songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Jeremy Lyon. It's Eddie's Attic, so expect someone to play an acoustic guitar.

Dear Silas (Aisle 5, 9:30 pm) - Formerly Trey Parker (real name Silas Stapleton III), Dear Silas is a singer, rapper, and trumpeter from Jackson, Mississippi.

Carolesdaughter (Courtyard at Masquerade, 6:00 pm, FREE) - Goth punk-pop by an 18-year-old Tic-Toc star.

And that's it for this week.  The premier of new music venue The Eastern will be on August 6, but I'm not paying "$49 - $99" to see Bright Eyes, and L5P's Variety Playhouse has already sold out its first show (The Mountain Goats) on August 7.  Terminal West reopens on Friday the 13th of August with Maggie Rose.  We're still waiting on word from the Drunken Unicorn on when (or if) they're reopening.
