To Chabanon, music was fully compatible with tragedy, and could inspire not just delight but terror and grief. Singing accompanies speech and action in everyday life - parents sing as they play with their children, as do artisans as they work, and so forth. But music is also present during such terrible tragedies as funerals and wars. What appears so monstrously absurd about darkwave is the fact that the singing and playing are precisely about killing, dying, and grieving.
