75 Dollar Bill are the duo of drummer Rick Brown and guitarist Che Chen. Chen chisels slick microtonal guitar lines against Brown’s backdrop of basic grooves produced on wooden boxes, shakers, bells, and sheets of lumber. They invoke sounds ranging from Southern funk to the New York avant-garde, from West African guitar virtuosity to South India raga. Both veterans of weirdo quasi-rock bands, Brown and Chen are erudite listeners and players, amateur musicologists in love with a world of sound.
They were supposed to play on the opening Thursday night of Big Ears 2020 but then coronavirus and live music stopped.
Here they are at Espace en Cours, an experimental animation and film studio at 56 Rue de la Réunion in Paris, back in 2016.
