Are Wrekmeister Harmonies a metal band that occasionally plays ambient pieces, or an ambient band that occasionally goes full metal?

An experimental music collective led by JR Robinson and named after a Béla Tarr movie, Wrekmeister Harmonies combine elements of drone, ambient, post-rock, serialism and heavy metal. 

A typically performance consists of a single composition, sometimes almost an hour in length, beginning with a slow build, shifting into a cathartic middle section, and concluding with either a peaceful or disquieting resolution.

Here they are doing pretty much just that in 2016 at Espace B in Paris (16 rue Barbanegre).
