It used to be so simple - find a radio station you liked, that played music that accorded with your tastes, and then rely on that station to bring you new music, new artists, and new songs as they emerged. Easy. But radio is all but dead and everything is decentralized now.
Today, we have to constantly wonder:
Have we checked out today's Recommended Videos on YouTube to see what they think we'll like based on our streaming history?
Have we listened to this week's Weekly Discovery playlist on Spotify?
Have you checked out KEXP's Song of the Day? This week's Live on KEXP video? KEXP's Weekly Mix podcast? Their latest Sound & Vision podcast?
And don't limit yourself to KEXP. Have you heard Today's Top Tune on KCRW? Minnesota Public Radio's The Current Song of the Day?
Don't forget the message boards. Have you checked out Reddit's r/Indieheads or 4Chan's /mu/ board recently?
Don't forget Pitchfork and Stereogum and Brooklyn Vegan and Consequence of Sound.
Also, don't fall behind on your friend's posts on Facebook and Instagram.
And seriously, you need to keep up with Rate Your Music and Bandcamp and Discogs.
Oh, and check your email. How many random bands have you given your address to, or sign up for their email alerts at shows?
It all becomes overwhelming and then on top of it all, some Retired Old Man starts posting daily updates on the Music Dissolves Water blog.
Free choice is seriously overrated!
(At least we don't have to worry about MTV anymore!)
