Favor Your Fortune

One of the things I love about the band Crack Cloud, and there are many things to love about them, is that on any cut you have absolutely no idea what they're going to do or how they're going to sound.

Which brings us to Favor Your Fortune.  Whatever else, I certainly wasn't expecting this.  If you played the track for me in a blindfold test, there would have been many, many artists I would have guessed first before I said "Crack Cloud," if I ever would name them at all.

They just continue to amaze, and are operating on a level few if any bands are today.

Crack Cloud

Qaanaaq is difficult to reach, even for other Greenlanders. Many have never met narwhal hunters, who, “even by Greenland standards, are extreme,” McClain said. Yet the figure of the indigenous Qaanaaq hunter looms large in the country’s cultural imagination, the way the cowboy might for Americans. But, although the mythology of cowboys, for all its flaws, represents a masculinity centered around stoicism and independence, McClain said that the hunters he spent time with were complex in ways that might seem contradictory. They are at once quiet and antic; they are brave and cautious, tough and gentle, aggressive and generous. “They need each other as much as they need their independence,” McClain explained. “And they don’t see these things as mutually exclusive.”     - Danyoung Kim, The New Yorker, September 2, 2020

Crack Cloud

More evidence that it's inadvisable if not impossible to try to pigeon-hole the band Crack Cloud.

The Next Fix

Lest we judge Crack Cloud by yesterday's song alone and mistake them for an 80s new-wave revival band, here's The Next Fix from 2019.
