On the Plunderphonic Hip-Hop Continuum: Some Random Thoughts and Comparisons

The problem with listening to The Avalanches, and it's a big problem, is that the music is so goddamn catchy that once you start, you can't get it out of your head.

To use the term "hooks" to describe Avalanche music is almost a redundancy, since their music almost entirely consists of hooks lifted from other songs or media.  It's only the hooks, with all the intervening content removed.

The "plunderphonics" approach of The Avalanches places them right about in the middle of a continuum with bands employing a similar approach.  On the more experimental, avant-garde side of this spectrum, we have Negativland.

On the pure pop, good-time side, we have the dance-oriented, ADD-damaged mashups of Girl Talk.

Avalanches fall right about in the middle of those two.
