Stanley Turrentine's Blue Note debut, Look Out!, was recorded in June 1960 with the rhythm section of Horace Parlan (piano), George Tucker (bass), and Al Harewood (drums). Turrentine's next Blue Note session was in July, this time a set led by the pianist Parlan and released as Speakin' My Piece. In addition to Stanley and Horace, the band included Tucker and Harewood, as well as Tommy Turrentine, Stanley's brother, on trumpet.
Did I forget to mention that Stanley's brother was an accomplished musician in his own right?
Here's Wadin' from Speakin' My Piece, a Parlan track that comes perilously close of copping Ellington's It Don't Mean A Thing (If It Ain't Got That Swing). Parlen also recorded the composition with just Tucker and Harewood, a combo that called themselves "Us Three." In 1992, inspired by Parlan's recording, a British jazz-rap group from London took the name Us3, and on their debut album, Hand on the Torch, they exclusively used samples from the Blue Note catalogue.
Here's Parlan's stripped-down, version of Movin' as preformed by the original Us Three without the Turrentine brothers.
