Soon after Jimmy Smith took Stanley Turrentine back to the chicken shack in April 1960, Stanley got the chance to lead his next Blue Note session. In June of that year, he recorded eight tracks with the rhythm section of Horace Parlan (piano), George Tucker (bass), and Al Harewood (drums), a combo that recorded under the name "Us Three." The album was released with the title Look Out!
Even though this set was recorded after the Stan "The Man" Turrentine session, it's generally regarded as Turrentine's first album, as it was released by Blue Note in 1960 shortly after it was recorded, but "The Man" wasn't released until three years later and then on another label at that.
Look Out! was re-released in 1969 by Sunset Records as The Soul of Stanley Turrentine, although it's still in print in both LP and CD form by Blue Note as Look Out! The original album only contained six of the eight tracks recorded - it wasn't until the album was available in CD form in 1987 that the additional tracks (and one alternate take) were released.
It should be mentioned that not unlike a great many other Blue Note sessions, this was produced by Alfred Lion and recorded by the legendary Rudy Van Gelder at his Van Gelder Studio in Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey. A 2007 digital remaster of the album by Van Gelder can be streamed today on Spotify.
The track Little Sheri from the LP was also released as a 45 single. The version above is Van Gelder's 2007 remaster of the 45 version.
