Chants of Niflheim (2011)

Clocking in at a sleek 53:39, Natural Snow Building's second album of 2011, Chants of Niflheim, is the shortest album in their discography if one excludes their EPs.

Another Blackest Rainbow release, Chants of Niflheim was recorded at home by Mehdi and Solange between January and March 2011.  It was a Record Store Day 2011 release limited to 500 copies and is now out of print and has not been reissued.  However, you can listen to YouTube uploads of Chants of Niflheim and you can still find the occasional used copy for sale.

The album contains two relatively long drones, Templars Ritual and H. Scudder, separated by Chants of Niflheim Parts I and II.  This is another very spacey album, not unlike The Centauri Agent, bordering on the ambient, like Waves of the Random Sea, with none of the noise-drone elements of Night Coercion.  The closing track, H. Scudder, contains some of the vintage folk-drone sound but overall the album is very dreamy, psychedelic stuff, and even if the cover art still depicts nightmare imagery, it's all very gentle and soothing.

And just like that, snap!, we're through 2011.
